The Miami International Airport, near downtown Miami, is one of the largest airports in both the United States and the world in terms of the number of passengers and cargo flown annually. Founded in 1928, the airport is run by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and is the nationā€™s largest gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean.

As part of the airportā€™s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), the North Terminal Development (NTD) Program project is a complete renovation of North Terminal Concourses A thru C, which consist of 39 gates. The project was awarded in two contracts. Concourse A was the largest concourse and is a single phase; Concourses B and C are a separate contract and comprise six phases. Although there were two package awards, all phases were worked as separate projects, with different A/E firms on most phases. This made for several overlaps and added to the challenge of such a large project. NFP installed approximately 25,000 sprinklers and worked approximately 90,000 installation man hours. These fire protection systems are all tied into a 12ā€ loop fed by three existing fire pumps. NFP also installed approximately 6000 feet of 12ā€ pipe to complete the loop of the North Terminal.

The project began July 2007 and is scheduled to be completed May 2011. Upon completion, the North Terminal will encompass 3.2 million square feet. NFP also was involved in other projects at the airport, including the APM station contract and the D-H Front and Back Terminal renovations. A design-bid-build project, the APM station contract is currently for five APM control rooms. Each of the control rooms is having a NOVEC 1230 system, a sustainable and environmentally friendly clean agent, installed in it. These APM station control rooms house the electrical equipment for the overhead APM train that connects all of the airport gates.

Also, a design-bid-build project, the D-H Terminal renovation presented a series of challenges as the terminals remain active and occupied during construction. These renovations involved working at night within the existing terminal to provide new sprinkler protection. Additionally, all shutdowns, inspections, and installations had to be scheduled to avoid any conflicts with air traffic and passengers.
