This project involved upgrades and modifications to the high bay to support processing of NASA’s Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft, and other exploration vehicles. A total of 10 levels of new platforms, 20 platforms altogether, surround the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft and provide access for testing and processing. Each full platform is protected by a fixed water spray system, fed from 18 Fire Protection Nozzles on each platform, flowing anywhere from 15 – 135gpm.
There were four new combined standpipe systems in installed on the west and east stairs from level 4 up to level 34, the riser/standpipes fed wet overhead systems in the egress walk ways. In addition to the wet system, eight new dry pipe quad valve assembly were built and installed to feed the open nozzle systems on the moveable platforms. Each platform was connected to a 40’-0” flex hose that allowed the platforms to retract and move up and down as need.
